The Governments of Spain and Germany have signed a digital identity interoperability agreement that will enable citizens to prove their identity and share electronic documents digitally. The framework will be decentralised. Citizens will use digital wallets whenever they are required to identify themselves by companies. The wallets will contain their personal certificates such as driver's license, qualifications, bank accounts.
Germany already has a national digital identity system based on the decentralised self-sufficient identity (SSI) model. With the agreement, the two countries will create a joint working group on digital identity that will pilot an "open and decentralized" crossborder identity ecosystem.
