The Greek government has announced plans to implement a biometric border management system that will record movements of foreigners within the Schengen area. The system is part of the broader Europe-wide Entry/Exit System (EES), which is scheduled to be operational in 2022. It will be integrated with the European Passenger Name Record (PNR) directive, for which airlines will collect passenger data for use in border management.
Greece plans to collect data such as names, passport numbers, fingerprints, and biometric photos. The data will be accessible to visa granting authorities, Europol, and investigating authorities and may be kept for up to five years.
