The Data Protection Act, 2020, a bill designed to protect the privacy and personal information of Jamaican citizens, was passed by the Senate on 12 June. This bill had been previously approved by the Lower House on 19 May and was given the go ahead by the senators with three amendments. At the end of the bill's debate, the government committed to a public education programme during the transitional period of two years before the bill comes into effect. This transitional period will allow all data controllers time to implement the necessary measures.
