The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) released a report titled 'Public Views on Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Policy'. The aim of the report is to provide a comprehensive overview of stakeholder views on the impact of AI across the intellectual property (IP) policy landscape, including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret policy, as well as developing issues about database protection.
There was consensus that there is no universally accepted definition of 'AI' at this time. The respondents agreed that current AI could neither invent nor author without human intervention. Across all IP topics, a majority of public commenters stated that existing US intellectual property laws are calibrated correctly to address the evolution of AI, but differed on whether new categories of IP rights should be introduced.
