In a study commissioned by Twitter, the platform has admitted it intensifies tweets from rightwing politicians and news outlets compared to content from leftwing resources. This finding came after the platform examined tweets from elected members and news outlets in seven countries: the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany and Japan. The research compared the timeline of 200 million users, who have their content tailored by an algorithm, with a traditional chronological timeline in which the most recent tweets are ranked first. Apart from Germany, tweets from the rightwing side of the political spectrum received more amplification and views. The platform does not know why its tailored timeline produces these biased results.
