The Boston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has identified an emerging trend where scammers pretend to be tech supporters from well-known tech companies to steal money from their victims. Investigation shows that scammers warn their victims through emails or text messages that their financial accounts have been compromised and that their funds need to be moved. Scammers create fraudulent support sites to access victims' computers and finances. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center stated that 'there has been an increase in losses by victims in a wide variety of tech support scams in the last five years'. The FBI has provided a list of measures users could take to protect themselves and guidelines for reporting such incidents.
