The government of Taiwan has suspended its electronic ID (eID) programme until privacy legislation is enacted. The decision was made following pilot testing of eID with local governments where concerns were raised about possible information leaks. The eID combines foundational identity with functions such as health insurance and driving licences. This puts the data collected at a high risk of exposing personal details of citizens. Taiwan's systems have previously been targeted by international hackers.
