NSPCC publishes list of potentially dangerous apps for children

UK's children's charity NSPCC with the help of Net Aware has published a list of 100 popular apps that they have labelled as "potentially dangerous" or inappropriate for children. The 10 apps that ranked the poorest in the survey were: Monkey, Omegele, Yolo and Hoop, Tellonym, Wattpad, Houseparty, Kidschat.net, Honk, Imo and Kik.

It may be mentioned that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK has revealed that 9 out of 10 children use the internet every day  and most of them have access to apps that involve talking to strangers, sharing personal information and sharing images and videos of themselves. On speaking with people ONS found that 1 in 50 children have spoken with people who turned out to be much older, and 5% of children aged 10-15 had met up in person with people they had met online.

Looking at the alarming figures, NSPCC has advised parents and carers to have open, regular conversations with their child about their online activity to help understand what apps and sites they are using and be able to explore the online world together.
