We recently interviewed, Lichen Du, who has been a Fortinet software development engineer for nearly two years. What led you to a career in cybersecurity at Fortinet?

My background in data science and software engineering aligned perfectly with the challenges in cybersecurity. My interest in cybersecurity was sparked by an article that discussed using statistical and machine-learning techniques to identify normal user behaviors and hacker attacks. This topic intrigued me because it directly impacts our daily lives. I was fortunate to get the chance to work for Fortinet, where I can apply my skills to develop robust systems that safeguard against cyberthreats.

What are some common misconceptions people have about working in cybersecurity?

One common misconception is that people working in cybersecurity are mostly hackers or ex-hackers who specialize in finding vulnerabilities and exploiting them. The reality is that the field encompasses a broad range of activities beyond hacking and defending against attacks. It includes proactive threat detection, risk management, compliance, and the continuous improvement of security protocols.

Also, cybersecurity professionals, including software developers and hardware engineers, have roles and responsibilities similar to those in other tech companies. We work on developing robust systems, implementing security measures, and ensuring overall data integrity and protection.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that the work I do helps protect people and organizations from cyberthreats. It's gratifying to see how the solutions we develop make a tangible impact on enhancing security and trust in digital interactions. I always feel proud when people mention that they or their companies are using our products. It's a great feeling to know that my efforts contribute to their security and peace of mind. Additionally, working with a team of talented professionals and continuously learning and applying new technologies keep the job exciting and fulfilling.

What it's like to be a woman working in the technology sector?

At Fortinet, I feel respected and valued as a professional.
