The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) have published ISO/IEC 18013-5:2021, a new technical standard specifying use of mobile devices for driving licences. It contains guidance interfacing a mobile driving licence,  mobile driving licence readers and the issuing authority infrastructure. In addition, there is guidance on how third parties can use  machines to obtain the mobile driving licence data, connect the mobile driving licence to the licence holder, authenticate origin of mobile driving licence data and  verify the integrity of the data. 

ISO/IEC 18013-5:2021 began as a proposal in 2018, and was considered by the ISO technical committee that deals with cards and security devices for personal identification.
