On 13 March 2023, the bill Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2023 was published. The objective of the Bill is to implement Directive (EU) 2020/1828 of the European Parliament and Council, which concerns representative actions for safeguarding the collective interests of consumers and repeals Directive 2009/22/EC, and to make provisions for associated issues.
The bill introduced a new civil litigation mechanism, including the 'Qualified Entity,' to take domestic representative actions, cross-border representative actions, or both on behalf of consumers against a trader that disrespects the collective interests of consumers.
