The European Parliament has voted against amendments to a Regulation that would have strengthened net neutrality rules in Europe. The adopted legislation in its current form carries a number of loopholes which could lead to a tiered Internet. For example, it allows for the creation of fast lanes for 'specialised services', or allows providers to offer zero-rating products. Today's vote on the Telecoms Single Market package will also see the elimination of roaming charges. Although MEPs might have been reluctant to vote in favour of the amendments and delay the abolition of charges, the delay would have been relatively brief.
