The White House is set to hold a classified briefing for senators on AI, organised by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, marking the first-ever of its kind in the Senate. This exclusive briefing will take place on 11 July in a secure compartmented information facility (SCIF) at the US Capitol.

In a letter to senators, Schumer said that the upcoming briefing would provide insights into how the US government utilises and invests in AI for national security, as well as understanding the AI activities of adversaries. He emphasised the importance of legislators listening to experts and getting knowledgeable about the matter, so they could effectively translate these insights into legislative action.

The briefing will also feature notable individuals such as Avril Haines, the director of National Intelligence; Kathleen Hicks, the Deputy Secretary of Defense; Arati Prabhakar, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Trey Whitworth, the Director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. In addition, Schumer has outlined plans to convene AI Insight Forums in September, aiming to facilitate the collaboration of experts and the formulation of comprehensive AI policies.

Chuck Schumer stands out as a prominent proponent of AI regulation within the United States. Lately, he has been actively advocating for the development of comprehensive legislation aimed at addressing the ever-growing influence of AI and implementing essential protective measures. Schumer emphasises the significance of bipartisan cooperation in the US Congress, acknowledging that AI's effects are already noticeable and that its far-reaching capabilities necessitate careful and cautious consideration.
