US Senators Maggie Hassan and Bill Cassidy introduced a bipartisan bill to improve electronic health record (EHR) systems and strengthen the nation's COVID-19 response efforts. The legislation, titled Patient Matching Improvement Act, addresses the inadequacy in linking records of individual patients across different healthcare providers. The proposed bill would improve the exchange of health information between health information technology (IT) systems, including ones in hospitals and COVID-19 testing labs, by ensuring that the US Postal Service (USPS) address formatting tool is available for use by healthcare providers. Research found that the formatting tool is effective for data standardisation and validation of patient matching.
