The US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy have announced a US$75 million investment into the creation of three new institutes that will carry out research on quantum information science. The NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Enhanced Sensing and Distribution Using Correlated Quantum States, led by the University of Colorado, will focus on developing quantum sensing technology for applications in precision measurement. The NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Hybrid Quantum Architecture and Networks, led by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will build interconnected networks of small-scale quantum processors and test their functionality for practical applications. The NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Present and Future Quantum Computing, led by the University of California, Berkeley, will develop algorithms for current and future quantum computing platforms.
