UN human rights experts have in a statement called on India to end the communications blackout in Kashmir which is affecting basic human rights such as freedom of expression, access to information and the organization of peaceful protests. The communications shutdown in Jammu and Kashmir sanctioned by the Indian government since the evening of 4 August has affected internet access, mobile telecommunication networks and cable television.
The experts in their statement are concerned that the measures imposed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, after the Indian Parliament revoked their constitutional status would escalate tensions in the region.
