After funding the deployment of high-speed broadband satellite technologies with some 8 million pounds, the government of the United Kingdom (UK) is again investing another 7 million pounds in innovations that combine satellite, wireless and fixed-line internet technologies for faster internet connectivity in rural areas.
The Digital Poverty Alliance applauds the government's commitment to ending digital poverty in the country in keeping with the organisation's National Delivery Plan. According to Interim Chief Anderson, addressing this issue includes closing gaps in digital devices, connectivity, digital skills and trust in online services. These are imperatives, she stated, if all individuals are to learn, participate and interact meaningfully in the digital economy.
To date, communities in rural UK account for some 15% of the country's GDP. Government initiatives this year have made it possible to connect 35,000 homes in these areas with ten times higher broadband speed.
