On Monday, Uganda launched Airtel's 5G network. Airtel Uganda became the first telecom company in the country to introduce 5G. The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, spoke at the official launch and highlighted that 5G technology will play a relevant role in helping Uganda close the digital divide. The 5G network can support up to one million connected devices per square kilometer, compared to 4G which can only support up to 100,000 connected devices in a similar area. The managing director of Airtel Uganda, Manoj Murali, also explained that incorporating 5G technology will positively impact various sectors like education, health, manufacturing, and commercial agriculture.

Why does it matter?

Introducing 5G holds immense importance as it can catalyze rapid technological advancement and economic development, as it will enable the Internet of Things to reach full potential. By providing faster and more reliable connectivity, 5G has the potential to enhance communication, empower local businesses, and enable transformative digital services that can uplift various sectors.
