The European Union's law enforcement agency, Europol, has confirmed that last week its Europol Platform for Experts (EPE) portal was compromised. The confirmation comes after an attacker going by the name IntelBroker advertised on a popular data leak forum, BreachForums, that it is selling classified data originating from Europol.

In the advertisement post, IntelBroker wrote 'In May 2024 Europol suffered a data breach and lead [sic] to the exposure of FOUO [for official use only] and classified data.'

The ad claims that the stolen data includes For Official Use Only (FOUO) source code documents, employee information, data from the space and cryptocurrency division of Europol's European Cybercrime Center (EC3), the Partnership on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (CCSE), and the SIRIUS project.

However, Europol has stated that 'No operational information is processed on this EPE application. No core systems of Europol are affected, and therefore, no operational data from Europol has been compromised.'

Cybernews reports that the advertisement on the data leak forum mentioned that the information and the full dataset could be sold for an unspecified price through Monero cryptocurrency.
