New 5G specifications allowing a single Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) to support the use of multiple applications simultaneously have been released by ETSI. Due to the high demand for applications running on mobile devices, such as banking, payments, and identity, UICCs are used today to facilitate network connection in all 3GPP user equipment, mobile phones, and internet of things devices. The most important tasks of UICC modules in the 5G mobile networks are to store network credentials and run network security and access applications in a secure and trusted environment. The use of the new UICC specification will also remove the use of multiple SIM cards to host two different subscriptions on the same device.
