The official launch of the Global Acceleration Framework for Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) took place during the 2020 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLFP). The SDG 6 framework mobilises UN agencies, governments, the civil society, private sector, and other stakeholders to drive progress on water and sanitation issues. The framework includes four action pillars.
1. Engage: The framework will mobilise a joint response and enable the participation of all sectors of society to generate a movement pushing for required transformations.
2. Align: The framework aims to reduce division through aligning operational and financial strategies, policies, and approaches.
3. Accelerate: The framework will enable entities within the UN system and mult-stakeholder partners to improve their support to countries by working together. This includes optimising financing for water and sanitation, using data and information, improving capacity development, and implementing ICT solutions for sustainable water management.
4. Account: The framework promotes shared accountability among all actors, and to communities and people by reviewing progress and learning together.
