The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to develop its Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Satellite to enable secure and unhackable quantum communication capabilities. QKD, based on quantum physics principles, ensures secure data transport by sending traditional bits as data and decryption keys as quantum entangled states known as qubits.
ISRO's objective is to incorporate this technology into their satellites in order to achieve closed-loop communication with minimal signal weakening. QKD is considered an extremely secure form of data transport. ISRO-Space Applications Centre (SAC) and other institutions, in collaboration with the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, will work over the next two years to enhance quantum communication technologies.
