Astudy commissioned by ICANN and conducted by Nielsen measured current consumer attitudes towards the domain name system (DNS) and the generic top level domain (gTLD) landscape, and found out that there is an increased awareness and trust in the DNS. According to the study, new gTLDs showed a modest increase in awareness around the globe, with 52% of the respondents saying they were aware of at least one new gTLD. When it comes to legacy TLDs, it was found that consumers were most aware of .com, .net, and .org, which rated highly (91%) as trustworthy destinations on the Internet. In addition, over 70% of respondents said they were in favour of some level of registration restrictions on both legacy and new gTLDs.
