On 12 July 2019, a side event to United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF 2019)was convenedby the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)and The World in 2050 (TWI2050)research initiative to tackle the opportunities and challenges regarding the digital revolution and sustainable development. During the event, TWI2050 Report: The Digital Revolution and Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challengeswas presented to pinpoint how digitisation can transform the world and enhance sustainability with special focus on six areas: human capacity and demography, responsible consumption and production, decarbonisation of energy systems, sustainable food systems, smart cities development, and digital revolution as a sustainable development driver. The report looks at how digitalisation can support sustainable development for all through pointing out the benefits of the digital revolution and negative aspects of the digital divide. To this aim, the report identifies the main prerequisites for digital transformation including prosperity, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and good governance. It further tackles the dramatic social implications associated with an increasingly digital future as well as the considerations about related governance aspects.
