On 7 November at an event in Johannesburg, Google announced the launching of a free Wi-Fi hotspot programme called Google Station in South Africa.
David Shapiro from Google's Next Billion Users initiative, said that the company will market the service through local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and that Google Station offers fast, free, and open-access to the Internet through Wi-Fi.
The service will be available at 125 locations in Cape Town, especially areas with low Internet services. Google is helping ISP partners to change fibre connections into quality Wi-Fi hotspots.
