Facebook has provided data as evidence to the UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar as part of the ongoing collection, consolidation, and preservation of evidence of the most serious international crimes and violations of international law committed in Myanmar since 2011. Facebook has previously refused to provide data related to this investigation. As reported by Reuters, UN investigators said Facebook had played a key role in spreading hate speech that fuelled violence in Myanmar against Rohingya people. Myanmar is currently facing charges of genocide against Rohingya at the International Court of Justice and outside the UN structure at the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes of deportation and persecution against the Rohingya people and violence in the Rakhine State.
