The Council of European National Top-level Domain Registries (CENTR) has recently published itsDomainWire Global TLD Stat Report for the third quarter of 2016. The report shows that there are about 326 million domain names across all top-level domains globally. Among these, 50.2% registrations are in legacy generic TLDs (gTLDs), 6,8% in new gTLDs, and the remaining 43% in country code TLDs (ccTLDs). In Europe, the market share is slightly different: among the estimated 69.2 million domain names, 51% are registered in ccTLDs, 36.8% in legacy gTLDs, and 2.5% in new gTLDs. These number show that, in Europe, ccTLDs (based on local registrants) have been growing at higher rates than gTLD registrations.
