EURid, the registry for the .eu top-level domain (TLD), has announced that over 81 000 .eu domain names were placed under a 'suspended' status as of 1 January 2021. These domain names had been registered by UK-based citizens or organisations which, following Brexit, are no longer eligible to register .eu domains. The suspended domains will remain in this status until 31 March 2021; during this time, services such as websites and emails are no longer supported, but can be reinstated if the registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria (registrants can indicate a legally established entity in one of the eligible EU27 or European Economic Area (EEA) member states, or by updating their residence to a EU27 or EEA member state, or proving their citizenship of a EU27 member state irrespective of their residence). After 31 March, the domain names will be placed under a 'withdrawn' status and can no longer be reinstated.
