In the aftermath of the data breach Equifax has suffered in 2017, which exposed the data of 143 million customers, the company hasagreedto a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and 50 US states and territories. The settlement includes up to US$425 million to help customers affected by the data breach, who can file a claim for free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, cash payments (capped atUS$20 000per person), free help recovering from identity theft, and free credit reports.
