The Chinese authorities have ordered Cambridge University Press to remove more than 300 articles related to Chinese history, which appear in the publisher's journalChina Quarterly. According to Cambridge University Press, it would risk being shut down in China if it did not comply with the request. The news was met with alarm by the academic community. According to a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, it is 'unprecedented that the censorship has reached out to the academic sphere'. While the block could be bypassed by using virtual private networks (VPNs), the Chinese government recently announced to crack down on VPN use in China.
