Apple unveiled its latest iPhone 15 lineup, which includes a new USB-C charging port instead of the standard proprietary lightning cable historically used. As a result of this change, older Lightning cables used by Apple users will no longer be compatible.
To accommodate this shift, Apple is now offering a range of costly new cables and dongles to facilitate the transition. A USB-C to Lightning adapter, priced at$29.99, is among the most essential items users will likely need to purchase. This dongle enables connection between the Lightning cable and the new phone.
In the announcement, Apple stated that its shift to USB-C was a way to adopt a universally accepted standard. However, this move was long anticipated as Apple was compelled to make the switch from using its proprietary Lightning charger cables after the European Union announced that by 2024, electronics manufacturers must include a standard USB-C charging port for phones, tablets, and cameras. EU officials believe this mandate will help reduce e-waste since consumers will no longer have to purchase new chargers when they purchase a new device.
