After a year of debate the parliament of Albania passed the anti-defamation package, that is supposed to counter the spread of disinformation and hate speech. These laws allow the Albanian Media Authority (AMA) and the Authority of Electronic and Postal communications to fine and suspend the activity of news sites. There is concern that these regulations are intentionally vague in order to give discretionary power for censorship. In fact, the Commissioner for Human rights of the Council of Europe asked the Albanian parliament to revise the laws that restrict freedom of expression. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the laws did not threaten free speech, but rather restore the rights of those who were unjustly slandered.
