TikTok CEO to meet EU officials in Brussels amid regulatory scrutiny

03 de novembro de 2023 Hi-network.com

TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, is set to meet with key European Union officials in Brussels this week as the social media platform faces heightened regulatory scrutiny. These meetings with EU industry chief Thierry Breton, EU digital chief Vera Jourova, and EU antitrust chief Didier Reynders come in the wake of concerns about TikTok's role in the dissemination of disinformation during recent events, including the Israel-Hamas conflict.

During the meetings, Chew will provide updates on TikTok's data security program, Project Clover -which involves storing European user data locally -and discuss the platform's compliance with the new EU online content rules outlined in the Digital Services Act.

Why does it matter?

Breton has previously set deadlines for TikTok to disclose information on crisis response measures and to detail their efforts to protect the integrity of elections and minors online on their platform. Today, he urged TikTok's CEO to strengthen measures against disinformation, mentioning that his team is currently evaluating TikTok's compliance with the DSA. This highlights a continued effort to hold TikTok accountable for safeguarding users and maintaining platform integrity.
