The Public Interest Registry (PIR) -the registry for the .org top-level domain -has announced the launch of the DNS Abuse Institute, dedicated to contributing to the global efforts to protect internet users from the the threat of domain name system (DNS) abuse such as malware, botnes, phishing, pharming, and spam. The institute will focus on helping the internet community identify and report DNS abuse, establish best practices, fund DNS research, and share data. Its work will cover three main areas: innovation (developing solutions to combat DNS abuse and funding research on cybersecurity and DNS abuse), education (maintaining a resource library of existing information and practices regarding DNS abuse identification and mitigation,  promoting abuse reporting standards, and publishing academic papers), and collaboration (acting as a networking forum and central sharing point for interested stakeholders related to DNS abuse issues). A support line was also created to help registries and registrars with questions related to DNS abuse issues.
