Many governments are experimenting with digital currencies issued by central monetary authorities. Digital currency won't have anonymity, one of the important aspects of traditional cash.
The lack of anonymity of emerging digital currencies is a problem that inspired US Congress Representative Stephen Lynch to propose the establishment of ECASH (Electronic Currency and Secure Hardware).
ECASH would be based on a piece of hardware or card issued by the US Treasury that could be used strictly peer-to-peer, like cash. Funds could also be uploaded onto phones or other hardware. It does not require the internet and it does not use blockchain.
