Hawaii will implement a new e-waste recycling programme, starting 1 January 2023. Under the new programme, manufacturers must recycle 50% of the weight of electronics they sell in the state of Hawaii. The programme will require that the target rises up to 60% in 2024 and 70% in 2025.
The state of Hawaii originally passed its extended producer responsibility (EPR) law for electronics in 2008, where EPR was calculated based on market share. The revision also implies updates on penalties for missing the target -from 50 cents per pound to$1.50 per pound.
The programme requests manufacturers to submit recycling plans and the state Department of Health expects to receive 49 such plans from island manufacturers.
