EUMETSAT and AUC strengthen earth observation cooperation for Africa

May, 23, 2024 Hi-network.com

The African Union Commission (AUC) and EUMETSAT have strengthened their collaboration in Earth observation by signing a memorandum of understanding. The agreement provides African nations access to data from EUMETSAT's latest satellite systems, including the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) and EUMESAT Polar System -Second Generation. The MTG satellites, with the first launched in December 2022, offer continuous coverage of Africa and Europe, while EUMETSAT's next-generation polar-orbiting satellites are scheduled for launch between 2025 and 2026.

The AUC-EUMETSAT partnership also focuses on building capacity and deploying new infrastructure in Africa. The agreement outlines plans to establish ground-receiving stations across the continent, enabling African countries to directly receive and process satellite data. Furthermore, the partners will collaborate on developing educational materials and training programs to ensure that African scientists and policymakers can effectively utilise the available data for decision-making and research.

The enhanced cooperation aligns with Africa's goals in space and climate change adaptation, complementing the African Space Policy and Strategy and supporting efforts to address environmental and climate challenges outlined in Agenda 2063. The agreement represents a significant milestone in Africa-Europe collaboration, demonstrating a shared commitment to leveraging space-based data and technology for the benefit of African societies and economies.
