US think tank, Atlantic Council together with the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and the Cyber Statecraft Initiative, published a new white paper titled The reverse cascade: Enforcing security on the global IoT supply chain. The paper suggests applying regulatory pressures to domestic technology distributors to push for the adoption of security standards throughout their supply chains. According to the proposal, domestic distributors of Internet of things (IoT) devices will not purchase or distribute devices that do not adhere to these standards. This paper reviews previous approaches to IoT security; outlines the challenges of enforcing domestic standards on a globalised supply chain; demonstrates how to apply the proposed plan on the case study of wi-fi home routers; and concludes by making recommendations for the US and EU cybersecurity agencies on how to implement the proposal
