The American Bankers Association, in collaboration with five financial services trade groups has released a whitepaper on the challenges and opportunities for financial inclusion for the unbanked and underbanked in the United States. The paper considers use of alternative financial services among the unbanked and underbanked, calling for policies to support digital wallets, postal banking and public banks. It concludes by noting that efforts for financial inclusion must first address underlying causes for non-inclusion of low income households in the banking system.
