Drivers of ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft are seeking sick leave as employees and not contractors in the San Francisco Superior Court. The drivers' lawyer requested an immediate hearing on an injunction from a federal judge, that would compel the companies to treat the drivers as employees for sick leave benefits. The goal is to protect customers from exposure to coronavirus.
Several drivers claimed not being able to self-quarantine because they do not have any other source of income. Uber and Lyft agreed to pay for drivers who have been diagnosed with the virus or placed under quarantine, but the amount they committed to paying drivers is below the level set by California labour law.
