The social media platform Twitter has confirmed that its service has been blocked and throttled in Belarus in reaction to protests following the presidential elections held on 9 August 2020. Twitter further went on to condemn the action by the authorities in Belarus by stressing that 'Internet shutdowns are hugely harmful. They fundamentally violate basic human rights & the principles of the open Internet'.' Outcome of the presidential elections, which many citizens consider as not credible, has sparked protests among citizens in the country. The protestors are demanding an immediate step down by the president to end his 26 years rule, which many consider as a repressive regime.
