The European Patent Office has issued a decision in case of applicant Bentley Systems UK Limited, stating that computer-implemented simulations are patentable, but the applicant must show that the invention addresses a technical issue. According to the experts interviewed for the World IP Review, it is 'believed that the decision will have far-reaching implications, given the increasingly important role played by AI simulations in areas such as drug discovery, medical diagnosis, image and speech processing and telecommunications resource management.'
