Spark, a New Zealand-based operator, will provide satellite-to-mobile services in partnership with satellite provider Lynk Global.
The pilot service, expected to launch later this year, will initially provide text messages over a satellite connection at specific times of the day. As more commercial satellites are deployed, the test will expand to include more customers and eventually offer voice and data services. Spark recognises the limitations of satellite connectivity, including the need for long-range visibility and vulnerability to weather conditions. However, it sees satellite technology as a way to improve the network's resilience, especially in the face of weather events caused by climate change.
Spark rival 2degrees is also working with Lynk for a similar test but is more enthusiastic and is aiming for a commercial launch before the end of the year. Spark also partnered with Netlinkz to provide Starlink enterprise-class satellite broadband. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition of satellite services' role in New Zealand's telecommunications industry and beyond.
