President Biden engages in dialogue with Big Tech critics on AI's impact on democracy

jun, 20, 2023 Hi-network.com

President Biden held a closed-door meeting with civil society leaders who are critical of major tech companies to discuss the potential risks and implications of AI. The primary focus of the meeting was on how AI could impact democracy and the necessity of implementing controls to protect people from its negative effects. Participants included Tristan Harris, the executive director of the Center for Humane Technology, Joy Buolamwini, the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, and Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media.

The meeting delved into topics such as the dissemination of misinformation and the exacerbation of political polarisation by AI. President Biden emphasised the significance of safeguarding democracy in the context of AI. This meeting highlights the increased involvement of the US government in AI discussions, evident in initiatives like the AI Bill of Rights and increased funding for AI research.

Vice President Harris is scheduled to hold a subsequent AI session with civil rights leaders and consumer advocates. However, the outcome of these discussions and their impact on potential legislation remains uncertain.

Technology companies such as Microsoft, Google and OpenAI have been actively lobbying in Washington and other governments, proposing regulations that will allow them to maintain their ability to advance in AI technology. However, critics have cautioned that these companies are primarily driven by profit and are attempting to preempt stringent government regulations or influence them to their advantage.
