According to a report, the Indian government is planning to replace biometric fingerprint or iris scan machines at COVID-19 vaccination centres with an Aadhaar-based facial recognition system in order to avoid infections. The government is currently working on a pilot project to verify the authenticity of facial recognition using Aadhaar data. Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number for residents or citizens of India, based on their biometric and demographic data. R.S. Sharma, the chief of National Health Authority, said the use of facial recognition technology will make the vaccination process entirely touchless. Currently the beneficiaries at the vaccination centres need to touch fingers at the machine for the biometric authentication, as well as the equipment for iris authentication.
