GSMA published The Mobile Gender Gap Report 2021 which looks at how the mobile gender gap is improving in regions like South Asia while other regions reported no progress. It further examines the key barriers hindering women's equal access to mobile internet which are literacy and skills, affordability, and safety and security. The research hinges on over 9,000 face-to-face surveys across eight low- and middle-income countries, and subsequent modeling and analysis of this survey data. The report finds that while women's access to mobile internet is improving in low- and middle-income countries, mobile ownership remains relatively flat: 83% of women own a mobile phone and 58% use mobile internet. The gender gap in mobile internet use continues to reduce especially in South Asia where it decreased significantly from 50% in 2019 to 36% in 2020.
