GSMA has published its annual 'Global Mobile Trends' report for 2021 where it highlights some of the implications the global pandemic has had on telecommunications operators. It underlines that the pandemic has contracted the operator business between 4% to 8% and that the growth of mobile and broadband revenue growth has been heavily limited by the economic environment. The study also stresses that Internet user growth is slowing and a digital gender and rural/urban divide still persists. Despite these challenges, according to the GSMA research, the mobile industry has been contributing to realisation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) since 2015, with 2019 being the most impactful year so far.
