The European Parliament passed the new EU Digital COVID Certificate Regulations. The certificate comes with a QR code, which will be used to verify that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19, has had recently tested negative for COVID-19, or has recovered from the infection. A common EU framework will make certificates interoperable and verifiable across the EU, while preventing fraud and forgery. The digital certificate regulations will apply from 1 July 2021 and be in effect for 12 months. The certificate will not be a prerequisite for free movement and will not be considered a travel document. Processing of personal data used for the certificates has to adhere to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To secure information and privacy, certificates will be verified offline and no personal data will be retained.
