The Rapid Alert System, an EU tool for monitoring disinformation, has been implemented following a number of disinformation campaigns on the coronavirus outbreak. Aside from indicating fake news, the system is used to exchange data on disinformation 'coming from external sources' between EU member states.
In order to address the rise in fake news in the context of the coronavirus, the EU Commissioner for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova held a meeting with representatives of tech companies including Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft and the trade association EDiMA.
