European Commission decided to send a letter of formal notice to Austria over certain shortcomings in its enactment of EU rules on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), which is a first step in the infringement procedure. The EU authorities identified various problems in Austrian legislation, such as an incorrect transposal of some definitions and noted that 'it does not provide for a prohibition of the disposal of untreated waste'.
Austria has two months to remedy shortcomings in national rules on e-waste.
